12/24/2023 0 Comments Softraid lite xt big sur![]() I was drawn to this product because of OWC’s past reputation with the Mac community and the product’s feature set and compact size.Bait & SwitchWhen researching this product, I saw multiple references to their “SoftRAID” and “SoftRAID engine.” I fact, there are 14 mentions of this on their product page. I purchased the Express 4M2 direct from the manufacturer. I could get nearly full performance from 1, 2, 3 or 4 cards regardless if they were matched or not. If in the future you made a v2 version of this enclosure with PCIe 3 x4 per card, I would be all over it. My single NVME which can perform at over 2,000 MB/sec actually not gets just under 700MB/sec.This means that I can get better performance with a cheap CHEAP USB3.1 enclosure (about 2X+ higher performance for $50), or a less expensive PCIe extension enclosure with the right PCIe card (4x faster for $215) - This includes OWCs own Helios compact enclosure as well as those from Sonnet or Akitio.OWC - great product, but you really should provide MUCH BETTER information to your users/potential buyers so they can make informed decisions. This means that unless you plan to raid 4 of the same NVMEs right off the bat (that was not my plan) you will get nowhere near max (stated) performance. The reason is that each one of your fantastically fast NVMEs is slowed to 1/4 speed of what it can do, because OWC (cost saving? rules of physics?) gave each card only 1 lane of PCIe 3 bandwidth (FAR SLOWER than the NVME). but the product description should be much clearer. Why do I say this? it gets a bit techie, but the enclosure ONLY achieves good results when used with 2 or more matched NVMEs. UPDATED - they are accurate in the answers they provide to questions. Two stars off only because its function and strengths are not represented accurately.
